When I first heard of the concept of asking the universe for a sign, I immediately felt compelled to try it. The thought that you could ask for a sign and the universe would answer you seemed like the easiest way to find out if you are on the correct path to your desires. Turns out, it wasn’t as easy as I thought.
The Person in a Pink Top
My first attempt at asking the universe for a sign involved a person in a pink top. I was back to writing on a manuscript that I had put aside while I focused on other manuscripts, I had my morning routine, I had started this blog. Surely, I was on the right track? So, I asked the universe.
The following morning, I took my daughter to soccer. The day was cloudy and when we arrived the rain started to fall. My daughter and her friends had a wild time playing in the rain and halfway through the game I remembered I was meant to be on the lookout for a person in a pink top. It wasn’t until the end of the game I noticed the manager - she was wearing a black jacket and underneath was a soft pink woollen jumper. Was this the sign? Was I on the right track? Was the jumper pink enough? Did it matter it was hidden beneath the jacket?
I had no idea.
The Man in a Mustard Top
I decided the solution was for my second attempt I was going to be specific. So, I asked for a man in a mustard top. For some reason, I thought selecting the gender for said person and picking a colour that could be better identified would work better. Mustard is mustard. But when no man in a mustard top had turned up, I decided that even if they did, I wouldn’t know for sure if it was a sign from the universe or if it was a coincidence.
The Fox
I’ve always loved foxes and every now and then you can see them darting about on the side of the road here in the Illawarra. There was a chance I could see a fox, and this didn’t happen very often, so the coincidence problem was eliminated. The problem with the fox was my daughter has toys around the house that are foxes, and I inevitably kept picking them up from the bath or the floor of her room wondering if the universe was showing me these or if I needed to speak to my daughter about cleaning up after herself.
The White Butterfly
One night the week after asking for the fox, I had a vivid dream about a pink butterfly. The next morning, excited that this could be my spirit guides letting me know this could be my sign, I disappointedly discovered there is no such thing as a pink butterfly (I probably should have known this already). The only reasonable thing to do was assume my sign was a more common butterfly – like a white butterfly. I really am a slow learner.
Birds I Haven’t Seen Before
Then something funny happened. I had a productive day and was feeling energised, so I went for a walk with my family down to the duckpond near our house. At the duckpond, I noticed a little bird with a long slender bill and deep blue and orange plumage perched on a branch – an Azure Kingfisher. I had never seen one before. A few days later after my morning ritual, I took a photo of a long necked soft coloured bird that was hanging about in our pool area at home. I showed the photo to my sister, and she said it was a crane. A crane! I had never seen one of those before either. My intuition was telling me this was my sign. I had come to marvel at birds in the last two years, always pointing them out to my family members and stopping to look. Birds made me happy; they lit something up in my chest. I also had a morning where I was continuously seeing dogs in the back of cars – could this be my sign as well? So, I asked the universe, my spirit guides and angels – If I am on the right track, please show me either a bird I haven’t seen before or a dog in people’s cars.
This morning, five days later, I sat down after posting on Instagram for Mindful Writer at Dawn and started to write my novel. From my study where I sit, I have a view of our street, looking out at the escarpment to my left and the trees behind the neighbour’s house straight ahead. After a little while I noticed a large black bird on one of the trees. At first, I thought it was a Magpie or a Raven, but as I stared there was something different about this bird. It wasn’t until it flew away that I saw the bright yellow underside of its tail – a Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo. I had never seen one before. Thank you, universe, I thought. I’m on the right track.
When I had finished writing the draft for this post I went upstairs and did a tarot reading. On finishing the reading, I heard a bird call. I looked out the window and couldn’t see any birds, but something told me to go downstairs. On going outside, I heard the call again and there was the Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo flying above a neighbour’s set of trees. There was no mistaking the beautiful yellow underside of its tail. There it was – this was my sign. I thanked the universe to acknowledge I knew and appreciated the sign.
What did I do differently this time?
I listened to what the universe was telling me. It must have known I needed help in picking a sign. The sign the universe was showing me wouldn’t be a coincidence. If I had continued with the man in the mustard top, I would be bound to come across someone in a mustard top eventually, especially if I was now looking for it. And there would probably be plenty of men in mustard tops out there. Plenty of dogs in cars too! But in the last few years I have been on the lookout for birds, and it has only been recently that I’ve been lucky enough to see these birds all at once. If I see another rarely sighted bird (for me), I’ll know it is the universe telling me to keep going for it.
Do you have a sign you have used or can you think of one that you may use? Let me know in the comments section, I would love to know! Hopefully it doesn’t take you as long as me to realise the best one for you.
